Packing Fragile and Odd-Shaped Items
The most stressful part of any residential move is packing, as it is time-consuming and tedious. Most people like to leave the packing to a local mover. However, with little knowledge and guidance, and some creative packing tips, you can safely and securely pack most of the items yourself.
There are a large number of fragile and odd-shaped items in every home. Packing and moving delicate items like breakable kitchen items (cups, bowl, glasses, plates), antique framed artwork pieces, electronic devices, antique furniture, lamps, and mirrors, is a challenging task. It is necessary to pack these in a way that they stay protected until they reach the destination.
When you decide on the DIY approach, you need to start preparing much before the day of packing. The first step is to identify all your vulnerable belongings. The next important step is to arrange these essential packing items:
Different sized boxes
Bubble wrap
Packing tape
Labels
Tools like scissors, screwdriver, pliers
Plastic wrap
Newspapers
Markers
Rubber Bands
Blankets
Towels
Make sure you have plenty of packing supplies to get the job done.
Delicate furniture
The heavy and bulky furniture items need adequate attention during a move. The first step is to dismantle the furniture into small parts. Heavy furniture that cannot be taken apart requires more planning and effort. The best and most convenient way is to wrap each of them in a blanket. A mixture of bedding, sheets, towels, and blankets will protect them from dents and scratches. For small items, measure the length, width, and height of the items and pack them in large shipping boxes. After you put the wrapped pieces in boxes, fill the gaps with different protective padding to safeguard them.
Glassware and ceramics
These fragile items are vulnerable and more at risk. They are expensive and rich in sentimental value, and it is crucial to be diligent while wrapping and arranging them. Wrap each piece individually using packing paper or bubble wrap to prevent scratches. Lay them vertically into boxes rather than stacking them. Pad out the gaps properly before sealing and labeling it.
Frames and artwork
Wrap each of them individually in at least two layers of bubble wrap or packaging foam and place them on their edge in a double-wall corrugated box. Pad the box entirely, providing no room for them to bang against each other. Secure them with box sealing tape.
Electrical items
We rely heavily on items like TV, toaster, refrigerator, and other electrical goods in our daily life. Electrical items, because of their shape and size, fare best when they can be packed in their original boxes. If you don’t have their original boxes, cover the equipment with a dust cover or sheet and place them in an adequate box. Make sure to pad the bottom of the box, too, along with the gaps. Detach power cords and cables before packing and store them in protective bags.
The more careful and organized you are while packing, the quicker and easier it will be to unpack at the other end. Make sure to label all these boxes with ‘Fragile’ marked on it. Still, if you have any doubt in packing and moving fragile and odd-shaped objects, it is always an option to hire a moving company to do the job. We would be happy to schedule packers to help you.
